Mayor Merrill's Message:
Last Friday night I was privileged to be invited to Blair Sorenson’s Eagle Scout project which was a very nice dinner and program designed to honor our local Veterans. I was very inspired by the beautiful music of the Sorenson family and friends, and recitals of The Gettysburg Address (in song), and Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death” speech by Dan Roberts. It was a great evening and a very fitting occasion to honor those who have served our country and helped preserve the freedoms we enjoy.
The mighty Bobcat football team was also playing that Friday night and I was able to get there in time to watch them finely finish off the Highland Rams. Good luck to them and the Bobcat Volleyball team and all the other school teams and groups that are involved in the fall sports season. I encourage you to attend the games and support the teams, the band, the cheerleading team, the dance team, and the spirit section. It’s great to see the involvement of all the students and how they support one another. I also encourage you to show your support and have more fun by standing and singing (or humming) along with the school song when played by the band. It really boosts the spirits of our teams when they hear that strong support from the fans.
Speaking of the high school, there will be a Veteran’s Day program at the Madison Performing Arts Center on November 11th at 10 am. The public is welcome to attend and it is very worthwhile. The Rexburg Area Chamber of Commerce hosts this event and includes a program complete with very inspiring speeches, wonderful music by the Madison High Band, and a wreath-laying ceremony to honor our Veterans. I invite you to attend. You won’t be sorry!
Speaking of the Chamber of Commerce, I’d like to publicly acknowledge Chamber Executive Director Janalyn Harris for the excellent work she has done for our community. Janalyn has recently announced that she will be stepping down from that position after three years at the helm. She has been wonderful to work with and has made some needed changes and improvements to many of the Chamber activities. We will certainly miss her leadership but wish her the very best. If you or anyone you know is interested in applying for the Chamber Executive Director position, please stop by the Chamber office and pick up an application.
You may or may not get this message before voting day on November 5th so I hope you will (or did) take advantage of the opportunity to vote for your desired candidates and issues. It is so very important to exercise this right and have a good representation at the polls. Being informed and involved in your government at all levels makes for the best government.
Remember the many Cultural Arts programs and city recreation events happening in Rexburg this month. Go to RexburgArts or RexburgRaces Facebook pages for dates and times of many fun events.
