Happy Independence Month! Since Independence Day might be over by the time some of you read this, I wish you a happy Independence Month!
The founding of our country is worth celebrating all month long, right? (Except shooting fireworks off all month long…. you do NOT want to poke the Mama Bears trying to get kids to sleep!) I hope you will enjoy or did enjoy some wonderful times with family and friends over the holiday with rodeos, golf tournaments, the parade, and the party in the park, as well as get together with family and friends. We are so fortunate and blessed to live in this great country and I hope we all give thanks and remember to do our part in preserving the greatness of the good ol’ USA! Our form of government is far from perfect, but it is the best to ever exist, and it is all of us, the People working together, who make it great!
I want to thank you for your patience (and long-suffering) with all the construction traffic delays around town this summer. If you remember, I have warned in every newsletter since January that this summer would be the “summer from you-know-where” as far as traffic is concerned. Despite the long lines, the construction is going well and is on schedule. Depending on when you read this, the good news is the south exit should be open, but the bad news is the middle exit will be closed soon as they start building the diverging diamond there. Please be aware of the situation and adjust your routes to work and other places accordingly. You will be glad you did! And remember, this too will pass, and WE WILL SURVIVE!
A bit of recent awesome news.... our own Chari Hawkins, daughter of Bill and Peggy Hawkins and a Madison High graduate, qualified for the Olympic Games to be held in Paris, France this summer! Marianne and I enjoy watching the Olympics every time, but this year will be so exciting to watch our hometown girl compete at the highest level. Congratulations Chari and the Hawkins family!
I hope you can get out of the traffic and do something fun with your kids, spouse, and/or friends this summer, and it seems like it is going by so fast! Go hiking, golfing, swimming, climbing or whatever you like to do or would like to learn. There are so many fun, beautiful places right close by to get outside and enjoy beautiful Idaho.
Check out RexburgRecreation and RexburgArts Facebook pages to find out details about events happening in our community. I wish you all a fun and wonderful summer!!
Sincerely, Mayor Jerry Merrill
