JUNE, 2024 | MAYOR'S MESSAGE

City of Rexburg

June 5, 2024

Construction, Construction, Construction…..it’s everywhere! If you go north, you hit it. If you go south, you hit it. If you go west, you hit it, the only way to miss it is to go east…no wait a minute…Barney Dairy Road going east is torn up and being re-built also! It really is everywhere!

We have so much happening in Rexburg right now. The growth of new homes and businesses is exciting, and we need new and improved streets to get around town, but it certainly is very inconvenient at times. Why is it all being done at once? We have a very short construction season with much to do. It’s June already and fall and winter will be here before we know it, so we must “make hay while the sun is shining!” I have been so happy to see the patience and courtesy of people in sharing the road and merging where needed in these construction zones. Please keep that up and give yourself plenty of time to get around town so you won’t be frustrated by the long waits in traffic lines. You might try leaving for work or home at earlier or later times than usual to help reduce the congestion during the morning and evening drive times.

There are many fun things to do this month including the Teton River Temple Groundbreaking Ceremony, the Teton Dam Marathon, the Community Rock Climb, the First Friday Art Stroll, the Yellowstone Cup Soccer Tournament, Baseball and Softball Tournaments, the Father’s Day Weekend Air Show, and many other events. Please check the City of Rexburg, RexburgArts or Rexburg Races Facebook pages for more details.

Looking forward to the Independence Day holiday and the 4th of July festivities, please be aware that the City Council passed a new ordinance concerning putting out chairs and marking off spots for the parade. It is now illegal to put anything out on the sidewalks or grassy areas along the streets to reserve spots until 6 pm the evening before the event. We were having too many problems with chairs blocking sidewalks, making it difficult for customers to get to the businesses on the parade route. This ordinance gives plenty of time to set up the evening before or the morning of the parade. Please be aware, however, that you leave personal items at your own risk.

The 4th of July holiday is a very exciting time and most of us love shooting off fireworks, but I will also lovingly remind you that it is only legal to shoot off fireworks on the night of the 4th and 24th of July. Many people have children trying to sleep or must get up early for work and shooting off loud fireworks for many days before and after these holidays is very interruptive to their peaceful nights’ rest. Please be respectful to others in this regard.

Thank you so much and I wish you a wonderful summer with friends and family! God Bless America!

Sincerely, Mayor Jerry Merrill
